UBUD : Purification at Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul Temple is one of Bali’s most revered water temples, known for its sacred spring water used in purification rituals. Built-in 962 AD, this Hindu temple is a testament to Bali’s deep spiritual roots and offers a unique opportunity for visitors to partake in a cleansing ceremony that is both tranquil and transformative.

The name “Tirta Empul” translates to “Holy Water Spring,” and the temple is built around a natural spring believed to have curative and spiritual properties. According to legend, the god Indra created the spring to purify his troops after a battle with the demon king Mayadenawa. The water is considered a source of eternal youth, healing, and spiritual cleansing.

The purification process takes place in the rectangular bathing pool, which is fed by 13 spouts of spring water. Change into your sarong over your bathing suit. Men and women use the same pool but are advised to dress modestly. Say a prayer or set an intention before entering the water. This is a deeply spiritual experience for many, so approaching it with respect and mindfulness is important. Here is the step by step to do the purification :

    • Enter the pool and begin at the first spout, moving sequentially to the others. Each spout represents a step in the cleansing process.
    • Wash your face, head, and body under each spout as a symbolic act of purification, releasing negative energy and inviting positive intentions.
    • Note: Two of the spouts are reserved for cleansing the deceased and should be skipped.

After completing the ritual, dry off and change into fresh clothes. Spend some time in the temple’s inner sanctum, meditating or simply absorbing the serene atmosphere. Offerings and prayers can also be made at the shrines to express gratitude and respect.

Along with this tour, we will also visit the Kehen Temple,  an ideal destination for those seeking a quieter, more authentic temple experience away from Bali’s crowded tourist spots. Its intricate architecture, serene setting, and spiritual energy offer a window into Bali’s rich history and culture. As our last destination on this tour, we also visited a traditional village with a consistent architectural design based on Balinese cosmology and Hindu beliefs. It’s Bali Aga Village also known as Penglipuran Village. For anyone seeking an authentic and serene escape, Penglipuran Village is an unforgettable journey into Bali’s timeless heritage.
